Physiology and pharmacology of the voltage - and ligand activated ion-channels in invertebrates. Peptidergic and aminergic modulation at synapses, receptors and ion-channels.

My research is concerned with the cellular and molecular mechanism of signaling in the central nervous system and in the periphery of invertebrates. Most of my work was done on the snail Helix pomatia nervous system analysing voltage-dependent K- and Na-channels, and ligand-activated conductances.

Recently I am interested in the modulatory mechanisms of endogeneous neuropeptides. The salivary gland system is used as a model system. This model provide opportunity to study the mechanisms of transmitters (dopamine and serotonin) and different neuropeptides isolated from molluscs on the neuro-muscular and neuro-glandular transmission. I am interested in the interaction between neurotransmitters and neuropeptides and between different pharmacological receptors (cross talk between receptors). For that purpose I investigate ion-conductances activated by neurotransmitters and neuropeptides. Different electrophysiological methods as single - and two - microelectrode voltage-clamp as well as patch-clamp are used. In the next I would like to involve the possibilities given by molecular biology in conjunction with classical electrophysiological methods.
